About the World Deaf Information Resource Project
This website is an initiative of the Gallaudet University Center for International Programs and Services (CIPS). CIPS created this web site to help people find deaf-related information resources around the world. As a first step in this evolving project, we have gathered contact information for hundreds of organizations and schools in more than 145 countries. Our goal is to add more countries when we obtain information for them. In the future, we hope to expand the website to include many more types of deaf-related information resources including links to reports on the living situation of deaf people around the world, links to resources related to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), and links to toolkits and training manuals oriented at deaf people and people who work with them.
Gallaudet is the only liberal arts university for deaf students in the world. CIPS operates four different programs: the English Language Institute (ELI), which teaches English and American Sign Language to deaf international students; the Global Education and Scholar Services (GESS), which promotes international exchange programs to and from Gallaudet University; the International Outreach program; and International Student Services (ISS). CIPS is a unit of the Gallaudet University College of Professional Studies and Outreach (CPSO) and is Gallaudet's center for all things international.
Dr. Asiah Mason, director of CIPS, credits this project as being the brain child of Dr. Jay Innes, the Dean of CPSO, and of Dr. Amy Wilson, Director of Gallaudet University's graduate program in International Development. Andrea Shettle coordinated the initial work of gathering information for this project during an internship for Gallaudet's International Development program. She has continued to coordinate the project since graduation.
